Christos Giakoumopoulo visited the ABA

A delegation led by Christos Giakoumopoulos, Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe, who was visiting our country, met with the leadership of the Bar Association of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ABA).

Anar Baghirov, Chairman of the Azerbaijani Bar Association (ABA), greeted the guests and spoke about the recent fruitful cooperation between the Council of Europe and the Bar Association, its usefulness and interaction, the constant development of relations and its importance for the ABA, e-huquq.az reports. Then, A. Baghirov invited the guests to watch the presentation prepared by the current Presidium, elected in December 2017, to get acquainted in more detail with the work done in recent years.

Thus, Bayram Orujov, Head of the Administrative Office of the Bar Association, spoke about the work done in the last 4 years in various directions, the establishment of international relations of the Bar Association from the Far East to the United States in a short time, membership in many influential organizations, gave examples of the practices role in the activities of the Board.
In addition, B. Orujov spoke about the application of innovations in the field of advocacy, e-services, including amendments and additions to many laws related to advocacy, as well as procedural codes and other legislation.

At the same time, B. Orujov informed the guests about the increase in the number of lawyers in the country, the fact that our lawyers can be accepted as lawyers in England and Wales, financial and academic support to the youth and students, local and international projects. On the other hand, B. Orujov spoke about the free legal aid provided to 25,000 low-income citizens in recent years, as well as frequent actions and competitions in the social and sports spheres.

Afterwards, C. Giakoumopoulo expressed his satisfaction with his visit to our country, introduced the delegation led by him and informed about the purpose of the meeting. Mr. Giakoumopoulo praised the work of the Bar Association in recent years, stressed the importance of the Bar Association role in the protection of human rights and freedoms, shared views on the further expansion of relations between the two institutions, the implementation of European Court decisions, the application of case law in national courts.

In particular, the Chairman of the ABA A.Baghirov answered the questions addressed by C. Giakoumopoulo and the delegation. The meeting was also attended by Zoltan Hernyes, Head of the Baku Office of the Council of Europe, Head of the ECHR Decisions Enforcement Department, Claire Ovi, Head of the Sector, Jasmine Chagh and her employees Kamran Isayev and Mahir Mushteidzadeh.
